This is a blatant rip off of Arkena Wyrnspire's forum XCOM project, but since he neglected to update his, I guess I'll start one of my own.
I am playing the game XCOM Enemy Within, along with a mod called Long War. A very fun squad tactics game, if you want to learn more, you can watch Beaglerush's videos on youtube. He's entertaining as hell, and he's the reason I got into XCOM.
I am using a modified name file that automatically assigns names from the list I used to new soldiers in the game. The list includes the A-list dusters, devs, as well as some additions that I decided to do for various reasons. Installation instructions can be found here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=178301&find=unread
If you would like me to add you to the name list, feel free to ask.
Mission Report #1 - Operation Burning Engine: The mission took place in a cemetery, a very small map with lots of heavy cover to go around for both sides and no flanking opportunities, not something you want to fight on when all you have is rookies, as their low accuracy and bad weapons are compounded by the enemy's cover bonuses. Not to mention how aliens are far more accurate and have far deadlier weapons, meaning that you have the disadvantage in straight up combat. Sectoids, the opponents to be expected in the first mission, have an ability called Mind Fray, which practically takes one of your soldiers out of the battle for 2 turns, and is completely unaffected by cover, so you cannot stay in a protracted fire fight with them.
New to Beta 14 of the Long War mod, the starting positions on maps are randomized, meaning you can land in completely new locations on maps, changing the initial tactics. In this case we landed on what would be the far right corner of the map, if looking from the old start point's point of perspective. From this point on, if I say something like "far left of the map", I mean from the old starting point's perspective.
The game had started me with these rookies: PFC Aisha Ctarl - Equipped with an AP grenade and a ceramic plate PFC Jenova Rhapsodes - Equipped with an AP grenade and a flashbang PFC SGT NOVA STAR - Equipped with an AP grenade and a laser sight PFC Shottygobang - Equipped with an AP grenade and a laser sight PFC 21yrOld Knight - Equipped with an AP grenade and a ceramic plate PFC Cross Atu - Equipped with an AP grenade and a medkit
PFC Aisha and PFC Knight are to take point, as they have more HP than the rest of the squad due to their ceramic plates. PFC Jenova, PFC STAR and PFC Shotty are right behind them, due to their flashbangs and laser sights, allowing them to massively reduce enemy accuracy and movement speed, as well as hit more accurately. PFC Cross is to stay in the back, as he is carrying the med kit, necessary to heal any combat wounds or revive incapacitated soldiers. If he gets incapacitated, I have to finish the mission within 3 turns or else he is dead.
I have decided to advance to a building located to the far left, as if I take command of it, I can easily take command of an elevated alleyway overlooking the cemetery itself, allowing me to flank opponents. The game had other plans however, as I encountered 3 sectoids while I was in no position to fight them.
After various attempts at drawing them in, they finally advanced, and using the alley way I attempted a flank. However, this flank revealed 4 more enemies, and if I used my flank to kill the sectoid, it would leave my soldier wide open for a flank, which is practically certain death. So after taking the soldier back to cover, I have waited for the enemy assault, hoping for the best.
Seeing as they got reinforcements, the enemy got cocky and advanced even further. This opened up my squad to kill some of them with overwatch, some of them with AP grenades, and neutralizing them with the flashbang, allowing me to take my time as their aim is reduced to LOL levels.
While the squad successfully ended the mission without a single injury, this wasn't a real victory. Out of 10 sectoids killed, only 3 left corpses and weapon fragments, due to the high use of explosives. Whenever possible you should attempt to kill the enemy with fire arms, as explosives leave less loot, however due to the nature of the map and the fact that all I had was rookies, my hands were tied, I had to use my explosives to avoid injuries and death.

Post Mission #1 base work: Due to not having enough weapon fragments or sectoid corpses, I cannot start either of the two projects available right now, which are xenobiology and alien weaponry, which is a huge setback as in Long War, you are racing against the aliens in terms of research and resources.
I started excavating and building an access lift to get to a very good steam vent placement. Thermal generators can only be put over steam vents, but they give massive amounts of power to the base.
I also ordered an additional interceptor, as the 4 you start with might seem like a lot to veteran XCOM players, but trust me when I say this: YOU NEED MORE
Lastly, I started building a satelite and a shiv, as well as an autoloader for said shiv.

Mission Report #2 - Operation Brutal Justice: Pre-Mission setup: After a failed interception , a light abduction took place in Argentina. I have decided that since this is a light mission, and it is the second mission, I can afford to once again only take rookies. I am doing so to level up as many troops as possible up from rookie status. It is important to have many reserve troops, as after every mission, the troops from that mission come back fatigued for 5 days, and while they are fatigued sending them on a mission will turn their status into exhausted, which will lock me from using them and extend how long I have to wait, hence it's important to have 3-4 full 8 man squads ready at any moment, as well as reserves to replace any injured troops while they are in sick bay.
The further you move into the game the harder the battles become, and sending rookies alone is NOT an option, hence you must use any opportunity you have to level up as many troops as quickly as possible. By the end of the first month you should have at least one A-team that have troops leveled up to the second rank, as well as around 30 troops that have moved on from rookie status.
As for the weaponry and equipment this battle, the map description says "Urban Large Structure: A single large building that will require entry". At first glance you might think it's a good idea to bring shotguns, however this cannot be trusted, as there are many maps that apply to this but lend themselves to more medium-long range fighting.
My setup: http://i.imgur.com/DrQCZCc.jpg
PFC CCP Rouge - Equipped with a Tactical Vest and an SMG, he will act as a scout with his high mobility, allowing the squad to move more quickly over all without taking a large risk. I put on some extra armor in case he puts himself on a position where he can't retreat or the squad can't advance, and I put on a grenade to allow him to deal more damage than an SMG does. PFC CEO Pyrex - Equipped with a Tactical Vest and an Assault Rifle, Pyrex will have average mobility and firepower, so he can act as both a medic and support the squad with firepower. Equipped with a grenade and a medkit. PFC Cross Atu - Equipped with an Assault Rifle and Tactical Armor, Cross will act as a general purpose troop that will lay firepower and grenades where they are needed. He trades one point of mobility for an extra HP to be able to take a slightly larger beating than the rest. PFC Cyrius Li Moody - Equipped exactly the same as Pyrex, he is the second backup medic in case Pyrex is incapacitated. PFC Patrick57 - Equipped with a Tactical Vest and a Carbine as well as dual flashes, Patrick will act as support. His carbine allows him to move faster than the average troop (not as fast as Rouge though), as well as be more accurate as the Carbine grants an accuracy bonus, at the cost of one point of damage. This means he has a better chance of flanking the enemy and hitting long range shots, as well as be close enough to throw flashbangs in case we need the enemy disabled. PFC Twelve Gauge - Just like Cross, he is the general purpose troop, only instead of a second grenade he carries a flashbang, just in case we need it.
If you're paying attention, you'll see I have a coloring scheme for them. Scouts - Light blue Medics - Pink Support - Yellow Infantry - Black
This allows me at a glance to figure out who's what in battle, and formulate tactics more quickly depending on their location and status.
The Mission: Pics: http://i.imgur.com/nwxEDCp.jpg http://i.imgur.com/EnU508a.jpg http://i.imgur.com/zjSgviO.jpg
The map we landed on can be divided into 6 parts: Left and right lanes, back and front, and the middle divided into a garage and a store.
The squad landed on the right lane to the back, and the lack of contact means the back as well as half of the right lane are clear. I decided to take the left lane through the garage, because fighting on the right lane leaves no opportunity to flank, but leaves YOU wide open to an L-shaped ambush from the store. I moved the squad into the garage, avoiding LOS on the second half of the right lane to not trigger any enemies and bring them into a firefight we are not in position for. After clearing the garage, we door breached and encountered a pack of 3 sectoids. Due to their position, they had no good place to take cover where we couldn't flank them, and so they moved behind the truck. My scout moved up to get a read on their exact positions , and after a quick flashbang from Patrick57 to allow us to take our time, we started taking them down one by one. We then moved in to clear the rest of the lane and grab a meld a canister we found. I heard contact movement from the store, hence we set up into a breaching formation.
After moving into the store, we encountered two drones. Drones have high damage resistance, and are hard to hit because of their flying defense bonus. This meant that none of the squad had any decent shots to take them down, hence I decided to Feline overlord of all humans - CAT MERC

... Guess who completely forgot about the existence of a certain thread.
So, this is awkward, I formatted my PC and I never did a backup copy of my save file. I hope that steam saves my save file, otherwise ;_;

Actual reason: I need to first understand how the name namelist works in Long War Beta 14i. It appears to have changed in some ways, which is why I had an army of Kirks from using my previous name list. For now I used a name list generator to get a list with existing names, I'll only start adding people once I understand how to do it myself.
